Abbey Meadows - Growing Together

Governors

The Governing body of Abbey Meadows is made up of representatives from the Local Authority, the Local Community, as well as Parents and Staff from the school.  All governors have equal status.

The Governing Body:

  • provides a strategic view of where the school is going,
  • acts as a critical friend to the school,
  • holds the school to account for the educational standards it achieves and the quality of education it provides.

Chair of Governors

The chair of governors makes sure that the governing body's affairs are conducted lawfully.  She also helps to run meetings and give advice to the headteacher.  Our current chair is Sheryl Williamson.

Staff Governors

Staff governors are elected by the school staff.  They may be teachers or support staff.  The headteacher may also be a governor.

Parent Governors

Parent governors are elected by other parents.  They are the parents or carers of children currently at the school.

Community Governors

Community governors are either members of the local community or live within the local community.

Authority Governors

Authority governors are appointed by the Local Authority.  The LA will appoint any person they feel is appropriate.

The Clerk

The clerk is paid for her duties.  She attends meetings and handles all the paperwork.  The clerk does not vote on governing matters.  She is able to give advice about procedure.  Our current Clerk is Melissa Ross.

Committees

The Governors elect to be a member of committee.  Each commitee is specialised and meets regulary as a group.  Committees report back to the full governing body.  Our current committees are: Personnel, SEN, Premises, Finance, Curriculum, Appeals and Standings.

Year Groups

At Abbey Meadows, each Governor is linked to a year group.  This means that they liaise with the teachers and meet the children throughout the year.

Some messages from our governors

Sheryl Williamson (Chair)

“I wanted to help my local community and felt the best way to do this was via this school. I have business and educational expertise which I felt would be of use to this school.”

Sharon Secker (Year 2 Link Governor)
“I became a governor at Abbey Meadows School when my eldest daughter was a pupil there. She is now 16yrs old and my youngest daughter is 13yrs old.
I originally became a governor because I wanted to know the school a little better than I did, and to help with ideas, comments and to give feedback from a parent's perspective.
When my youngest daughter left Abbey Meadows in July 2009, I wasn't ready to leave the board of governors.  I decided to stay on as I have total admiration for all of the staff as they do a fantastic job and I wanted to continue sharing this with parents and carers. I also wanted to watch the new part of the school take shape, and would like to stay at least until the new build is open and welcoming new pupils and parents as I am a very big supporter of the school."

Nick Mazur (Year 2 Link Governor)
“I am a father of three with a background in business and marketing in the media sector and more latterly the education sector with a local exam board.   I volunteered to become a Governor because I wanted to "put something back into society".
I am passionate about education and believe that every child has a right to the best education possible as a start in life.  The staff of Abbey Meadows mirror my expectations and I am proud to be a governor of the school.

Heather Waterson (Year 4 Link Governor)
“Before having my own children, I thoroughly enjoyed my teaching career. When my eldest son started school I was keen to be involved in his education and the school community to which he belonged. I felt that becoming a parent governor was one way in which I would be able to do this and it enables me to give something back to the school.
I obviously bring my own teaching experience to the role as well as a parental perspective on school life. As a parent, I had been impressed with how talented and dedicated the staff at Abbey Meadows are and it is a privilege to be able to work more closely with them in my role as governor.”

Roger Williams (Year 5 Link Governor)
“I am a governor because I think that a good school and a good education  is one of the most significant factors affecting the life chances of young people and I want them to be the best they can be.
I bring an understanding of the  secondary education sector (i.e. the destination from Abbey Meadows).  From my position in the church, I further add an understanding of the particular issues facing the children who live in this area.”
